We The People’s customer base is a cross-section of America with a strong helping of middle-income families who need legal document preparation services but seek a middle ground between costly attorneys and complete do-it-yourself options.

Many middle-class consumers believe basic legal services are priced out of their reach, said Jeffrey Weiss, chairman and chief executive officer of the We The People. According to research of industry customers by Kanter International, 40 percent of respondents waited six months or more before seeking help for such things as personal bankruptcies or uncontested divorces.

“We found that our customer didn’t act on their needs because they didn’t know they had a more affordable option.” Said Melissa Soper, We The People’s executive vice president and general manager. “If you can’t afford to get these things done, many consumers simply don’t do them.”

We The People’s document preparers provide the affordable assistance consumers need to make sure critically important legal documents such as wills, living wills, uncontested divorces, personal bankruptcies, incorporations and more are prepared correctly to protect themselves and their families.

The process is very simple and begins with a free orientation. Depending on what legal document is needed, customers complete a simple workbook that guides them step-by-step through all the details needed to complete their document accurately and efficiently. After the workbook is completed the information is used to prepare the necessary court documents at We The People’s Central Processing Center.

Most documents are prepared within two to five days, though some might take seven to 10 days depending on the complexity and type of document. Customers can then file their own documents with the courts, or in some states, We The People can handle the filling. Courts require an additional filing fee.

We The People’s legal document preparers are experienced professionals who are authorized to prepare legal documents for customers, but only at the customer’s direction. Because they don’t practice law, legal document preparers cannot make suggestions as to what customers should do in particular matters. They can provide legal information for tasks that might be confusing and overwhelming to customers, but they cannot give legal advice.

Consumers who use We The People to help represent themselves in undisputed legal matters bypass the unnecessary hiring of an attorney.

People come in and ask, “How can you do a divorce for less?” said Roy Hibberd, We The People’s senior vice president of franchise relations, who is also an attorney. “The answer is that we don’t do it. We show our customers how to do it. Everyone knows that you can go to a small-claims court and sue somebody for $10 or $1000, but we need to educate consumers as to what they can do themselves regarding legal document preparation.”

Customer come to We The People because they are oftentimes facing critical issues in their lives and want guidance and support that is within their budget.

Consumers view We The People as a trusted service and its high customer-service standards strike a chord with customers. According to Hibberd, referrals comprise 50 to 75 percent of the business of We The People franchises that are at least two years old. According the survey results, 89 percent of customers would use the service again if the need arose.

“Our customer know they can trust us to do these incredibly significant tasks for them,” said Weiss, We The People’s CEO. “There’s a lot of anxiety. Most people don’t realize – that if the documents are completed accurately – how simply most of their needs can be taken care of.”

Because so many of We The People’s customers thought they had no affordable options when it came to taking care of simple, uncontested legal matters they show their appreciation in innumerable ways.

“They send chocolates, flowers and gift baskets telling our franchises, “You changed my life,” said Soper. “We may have helped a person file for divorce and let them move forward in their life. Customers write us saying: “I didn’t think I could do it because I couldn’t afford a divorce, but We The People helped me do it.”
